A small group of Yukon cyclists put together some personal-best performances last weekend at the 2014 B.C. Youth Road Race Championships. A group of five travelled to Courtenay to compete in the provincial event and a time trial, hosted by the Comox Valley Cycle Club. U Kon Echelon members representing the Yukon were Cayla Jackson, David Jackson, Tristan Muir, Ava Irving-Staley and Trena Irving. Irving, the club’s coach, said the weekend proved to be a quality learning experience for the young riders. Irving-Staley finishing sixth out of seven in Saturday’s road race, holding her own despite being one of the youngest riders in the U13 category. Muir, meanwhile, showed some massive potential, leading the peloton for a whole nine km, eventually finishing sixth. Irving said while she was proud of Muir’s hard work, the U13 cyclist needs to make some changes to his strategy in order to finish stronger. “He is new to cycling this season and shows massive potential,” Irving said. “As a speedskater and swimmer, Tristan has a fabulous fitness base and knows how to go fast and hard.” Para-athlete Cayla Jackson finished first in her U17 para-category, giving a strong effort in the road race. Fellow U17 cyclist David Jackson was sick Saturday and didn’t compete. Sunday saw Irving-Staley give it her all in the time trial. She would go on to set a new personal-best time in the 16-km distance, placing fifth with a time of 41.12. Her previous best time for a 15-km route was 44 mins. Meanwhile, coach Irving said Muir logged a heroic performance in his race, finishing fourth out of seven and shaving five minutes off his previous best time to finish in 31.28. Both Jacksons also logged personal bests in their categories Sunday. Irving competed in the master women’s category, finishing first by default with a time of 29.41. The coach is hoping to put together a team for the Western Canada Summer Games next summer in Wood Buffalo, Alta. Cyclists aged 14 to 20 can email her at [email protected]. |
